Hi Cindy! Great question – from what I understand, D3 is the optimal supplement form, many labels will state the form specifically. (and Calcium’s best form is Calcium Citrate, as you probably know)
Hi Cheri, The sunlight is quite weak in northern areas, probably even year round. My guess would be yes. But again, each is an individual case, best to check your blood Vitamin D level through your doctor, if your blood level is normal it’s not as much of an issue.
Hi Chera, I was at a American Academy of Pediatrics conference once and asked a renowned expert in pediatric integrative health if high doses of Vitamin D could be unsafe in infants. She essentially laughed, saying that Vit D is very safe and not to worry about it. I would guess that the same would be true in pregnancy (following reasonable dose guidelines as discussed in my post), however as in every case I have to recommend that you check with your doctor first.
I read a few years ago that Vit D deficiency is commonly found in people who have depression, especially SAD, since there is typically less sun in the winter. I started taking 20,000 iu in winter and it really helped! Vit D3 is a very inexpensive supplement.
Yes, for breast Cancer Vitamin D is a great source to prevent from this disease. Doctors also suggest some healthy vegetable for getting Vitamin D. cordycepscordyceps

Susan, is there a “quality or source” issue related to Vit D as in the different types of calcium?

Susan,
Great article! What is the best way to determine if you are deficient in vitamin D or not?
Hi Cal!
The best way is to ask your doctor to order a blood test for your vitamin D level.
So glad you liked the article!
Susan
Susan,
Should you take 4000 IU all year round? I live in red deer, ab.
